From 6,500 cyclists taking off from Holy Cross for the Pan-Mass Challenge, to a massive African cultural festival downtown, a Revolutionary War reenactment at Old Sturbridge Village, the opening of a brand-new exhibition at the Worcester Art Museum, a bustling Sunday farmers market, and live music into the evening — this weekend is one of the most varied we have seen all summer. Saturday, August 1
Pan-Mass Challenge — Worcester Start (Spectator Event)
For the first time in its 47-year history, the Pan-Mass Challenge begins from Worcester. Nearly 6,500 cyclists and more than 3,500 volunteers are gathering at the College of the Holy Cross for a 177-mile ride to Provincetown, raising money for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute with a goal of $79 million. Riders roll out at 6:00 AM sharp, and spectators are welcome on the Holy Cross campus to cheer them off. It is a powerful way to start your Saturday — the energy, the sense of community, and the shared purpose are genuinely moving. Redcoats and Rebels — Old Sturbridge Village (Day Trip)
One of the most popular living-history events in New England returns to Old Sturbridge Village this weekend. Redcoats and Rebels brings hundreds of reenactors portraying British and Continental soldiers, camp followers, artisans, and townspeople for an immersive Revolutionary War weekend. Watch tactical demonstrations, tour military encampments, hear the crack of musket fire, and experience what life was like for soldiers and civilians in the 1770s. The Village's regular exhibits and costumed interpreters are also running, so you get the full OSV experience alongside the reenactment. It is about a 25-minute drive from Worcester, and the Sturbridge Farmers Market on the Town Common (9:00 AM – 1:00 PM) runs Saturdays too if you want to make a full day of it.
4th Annual Worcester African Festival
Presented by the Massachusetts Organization of African Descendants, the 4th Annual Worcester African Festival transforms City Hall Common into a vibrant celebration of African cultures and heritage. With over 5,000 attendees expected, this free festival features African fashion shows, authentic cuisine from across the continent, live music and dance performances, merchandise vendors, kids' activities including bouncy houses, and DJs keeping the energy high all afternoon. At 10:00 PM there is an after-party at a nearby venue. It is a fantastic, family-friendly event that has quickly become a highlight of Worcester's summer calendar — and admission is free.
Worcester Art Museum — "Now Now" Opens + Artist Talk
Saturday is a big day at the Worcester Art Museum. A brand-new exhibition, "Now Now", opens on August 1 and runs through November 1 — it is the museum's latest contemporary showcase and well worth a visit on opening day. At 2:00 PM, catch an Artist Talk with Kara Patrowicz, offering a behind-the-scenes look at her creative process and current work. The acclaimed Fever Dreams of a Cool-Breathed Earth exhibition by Christa Donner and Andrew S. Yang is still on view through August 16, so this is your chance to see it before it closes. The 1:00 PM Tour of the Galleries also runs as usual. General admission is $20 for adults, $16 for seniors and students, and free for members, kids under 17, and EBT/WIC cardholders.

ArtsWorcester — Summer Exhibition
If you are downtown for the African Festival, swing over to ArtsWorcester's main galleries just a few blocks away. Their summer exhibition — featuring work from regional artists — runs through August 23 and offers a thoughtful look at contemporary art in Central Massachusetts. Redcoats and Rebels continues on Sunday with a full day of reenactments, tactical demonstrations, and living-history programming. If Saturday is already spoken for, Sunday is just as good — the same immersive Revolutionary War experience, minus the opening-day crowds. Pair it with a morning coffee on the Sturbridge Town Common for a truly relaxing weekend escape.
Market on Exchange
Worcester's beloved Sunday market is in full swing for the season. Market on Exchange (formerly the Brussels Street Market) brings together over 30 regional food vendors, local farms, bakers, food trucks, artisan food makers, live music, and craft beer in the open-air lot behind the Palladium. It is dog-friendly, family-friendly, and offers a SNAP Match Program for SNAP recipients. This is the perfect lazy-Sunday activity — grab fresh bread, local vegetables, a pastry, and a coffee, then find a sunny spot to enjoy it all.

Worcester Art Museum — Tour of the Galleries
The Worcester Art Museum is open Sunday with its free weekly Tour of the Galleries at 1:00 PM, led by knowledgeable docents who bring the collection to life. The newly opened "Now Now" exhibition is a must-see, and Fever Dreams of a Cool-Breathed Earth closes in just two weeks. The museum is a short walk from Market on Exchange, so you can easily combine both into one relaxed afternoon.

The Word Alive — the post-hardcore band known for their explosive live performances — headlines Sunday night with support from Not Enough Space and Downswing.
