Happy Fourth of July weekend! Worcester County is bursting with patriotic energy, summer festivals, and community celebrations this long weekend. Whether you’re watching fireworks light up the sky at Polar Park, strolling the Grafton parade, or catching a Friday night concert in the park, there’s something for everyone. Here’s what I’m most excited about.
Friday, July 3
Fitchburg Civic Days Block Party & Fireworks
Fitchburg’s beloved Civic Days celebration kicks off the holiday weekend with a free community block party along Boulder Drive. Expect live music, food vendors, family activities, and a fireworks show at 9:30 PM. This is a week-long tradition in one of Central Massachusetts’ most spirited cities, and the Friday night block party is always a highlight.
Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra — Patriotic Pops Concert
The Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra’s annual Patriotic Pops Concert is a gorgeous way to kick off Independence Day weekend. This year’s concert celebrates the orchestra’s 75th anniversary, with conductor Myron Romanul, vocal soloists, and a fireworks display after dark. It’s free, family-friendly, and the perfect summer evening out. Bring a blanket, grab some snacks, and enjoy the music under the stars.
Saturday, July 4
WooSox 4th of July Family Fest
Polar Park is throwing its 2nd Annual 4th of July Family Fest, and it’s a highlight of the holiday. The afternoon is packed with family activities: WooCages batting cages, baseball inflatables, Touch-A-Truck, face painters, glitter tattoos, balloon artists, water balloons, and a live performance by the Worcester Symphony Orchestra. At 7:00 PM, the outdoor movie screen lights up with Field of Dreams, followed by a UniBank Fireworks display after the movie. Advance tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids (ages 3–12), with VIP BBQ packages available.
Grafton 4th of July Parade
Nothing says small-town America like a 4th of July parade, and Grafton’s annual celebration is one of the best in Worcester County. The parade route runs from North Street Elementary School to the Grafton Common, with marching bands, fire trucks, floats, and community groups. It’s a beloved tradition and a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday with a classic New England feel.
Fitchburg Civic Days — 4th of July Parade
Fitchburg’s Civic Days parade is a Central Massachusetts institution, featuring fire trucks, marching bands, clowns, floats, and community groups. The route runs from Summer Street to the Upper Common, and it’s a free, family-friendly event that draws spectators from across the region. After the parade, enjoy food, games, and community activities downtown.
Worcester Art Museum — Weekend Visiting
If you need a break from the fireworks and parades, the Worcester Art Museum is open this weekend with two exhibitions worth catching: “Fever Dreams of a Cool-Breathed Earth” by Christa Donner and Andrew S. Yang (through August 16) and the “Arms and Armor” collection. It’s a perfect air-conditioned stop on a warm July day, and a great way to experience Worcester’s cultural side.
